ROWING INSIGHTS
The rowing boats, called shells, are made of lightweight carbon fiber. The smallest boat on the water is called a single scull, and is only a foot wide, 27-30 feet long, and weighs approximately 30 pounds. An eight is the largest boat at 60 feet and about 200 pounds. Oars are used to propel the shells. Sweep oars are longer than sculling oars.
FUN FACTS
Physiologists claim that rowing a 2,000 meter race, equivalent to 1.25 miles, is equal to playing back-to-back basketball games.
The first national governing body for a sport in the US was for rowing. Founded in 1872 as the National Association for Amateur Oarsmen, it was changed to the United States Rowing Association in 1982.
